Ian works in the Species Recovery Unit at the RSPB (BirdLife in the UK), and is responsible for co-ordination of the Globally Threatened Species Recovery Group, project management, and oversight of several species (including the Sociable Lapwing and Semper's Warbler) and island restoration in Cape Verde with the Portuguese BirdLife Partner SPEA.

After a BSc at the University of York, Ian graduated from the University of Oregon with a Masters in Environmental Science, and has worked on captive breeding programmes at the International Crane Foundation in the USA and at Jersey Zoo.  He has been employed at the RSPB for 21 years, with experience in conservation science, information management, communications, and species recovery.  He also worked voluntarily as the Bali Starling Studbook Co-ordinator for the UK, and helped compile the Rare Animal Census for the International Zoo Yearbook.

Ian's mother tongue is English, and he has a good working knowledge of French and Spanish.  He is learning Portuguese and Italian.   He works part-time (3 days a week).
